Misleading Safestyle ads are banned

TV and radio advertisements promoting double glazing firm Safestyle UK have been banned for making “misleading” claims that customers can get a 55 per cent discount.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruled that the ads were “likely to mislead consumers as to the savings available” and they must not be broadcast again in their current form.

Bradford-based Safestyle was unavailable for comment.

The offending TV ad featured a man wearing outdoor clothing, sitting in an arm chair in a cold room. Another man speaking to the camera, said: “This man is blue with cold. He has not got Safestyle double-glazing. Right now you’ll get a massive 55 per cent off. Ask for a free quote ...”

The ASA said that two members of the public had challenged whether the 55 per cent discount claim was misleading and whether it could be substantiated. The ASA acknowledged that Safestyle products had been sold at list price during the six months before the ads were broadcast, but noted that the goods had only been offered at full price for a total of 26 days during those six months. A spokeswoman for the ASA said the ads could still be run if they take out the claims.
