Much-delayed retail scheme could go ahead

AFTER four years of delays, Sheffield’s new retail quarter scheme could be completed by 2019, it has been announced.

In August, Sheffield Council ended its agreement for the Sevenstone project with developer Hammerson.

However, the authority has announced it has been approached by several potential developers and investment companies over the scheme to transform an area between Barkers Pool, The Moor and Pinstone Street into a shopping and leisure complex.

Officials said the council “has the land assembled, utilities in place, established the level of funding available, and methodology to inject the funding to undertake supporting public works”.

A spokesman added: “It has confirmed a scheme is viable and so is now seeking a new development partner to move the project forward in the shortest time possible.”

Council leader Coun Julie Dore said: “At a time when we are faced with unprecedented cuts we retain our ambition for Sheffield. We are committed to attracting business and development, to creating and protecting jobs, to standing up for Sheffield.”
