York Conservatives oppose congestion commission

YORK CONSERVATIVES will try to block the setting up of a ‘congestion commission’ to look at ways of ending the city’s chronic traffic jams.

The Labour-run council’s cabinet approved the move on Tuesday night but the Conservative group have called-in the decision, meaning it will be reviewed.

The commission follows the controversial closure of Lendal Bridge to private vehicles last year which ended amid threats of legal challenges and has led to continuing rows over how best to refund penalised drivers.

Coun Tony Richardson said it was wrong for the current administration to “shackle” the authority with the commission when city elections will take place on May 7 which could produce a council with different priorities.
