Yorkshire council leaders want Brexit voice

YORKSHIRE council leaders are to draw up a Brexit priority list and will seek a seat for the region at talks over Britain's future, The Yorkshire Post has learned.

A “Brexit group” will be formed to compile a shortlist of demands from Yorkshire.

The leaders of North Yorkshire County Council, Barnsley, East Riding and Leeds will initially lead the work “to identify common issues and asks of Government” and approach MPs to get involved.

The Government has promised to consult widely over Brexit but its discussions have so far focused on the devolved administrations and London.

Brexit Secretary David Davis, the Haltemprice and Howden MP, has called a summit in York later this year for the new metro-mayors due to be elected in May.

But Yorkshire’s deadlock over devolution deals means the region will not have mayors to send.

With formal Brexit talks expected to begin within days, EU commission president Jean-Claude Juncker yesterday expressed hope Britain could one day return.

Theresa May could trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, the process for beginning exit from the EU, as soon as Tuesday if there are no further delays in Parliament to the Brexit Bill.
