YP Letters: B&B breakfast claim left sour taste over EU

MY partner Ruth and I spent two nights in Scarborough, staying at a bed and breakfast establishment.

At breakfast the next morning, I asked the proprietress if she could give me some warm milk to have with my cereal.

She replied: “Due to European Regulations we are not allowed to heat milk in a microwave oven, so I’m unable to give you any warm milk.”

This statement made me dumbstruck. If it was true, then why couldn’t she use a small pan?

But surely her claim that EU regulations stopped her from using a microwave was complete and utter rubbish.

I’ve decided to vote to leave purely in the hope that if successful, then the next time I stay in a B&B I’ll be legally able to have warm milk with my cereals.

THE EU – who will benefit if we stay? The privileged of course. Top civil servants, bankers, big businessmen and, first and foremost, our politicians. Remember the expenses scandal?

If we stay in and Europe continues to legislate two-thirds of our laws, we shall no longer require to pay the politicians and their hangers­ on who feed off our taxes.

Can we expect to see their reduced workload reflected in a reduced number of MPs? Watch this space!

WITH respect to the many people unsure as to how to vote in the forthcoming referendum, I suggest that they ask themselves that were we not members of the EU, and the referendum was to decide whether we should join, which way would they vote?

THE Remain campaign advocate staying in the EU as some sort of insurance policy for trade, finance, jobs, free movement and protection from conflict. The premium of £50m a day is far too high a price to pay.

I HAVE voted in every election – general /local/ referendum – since 1964 willingly. For the first time, I shall not be voting – that is in the Cameron fudge on June 23 – which in reality has been an internal Tory dispute for several Parliaments , and which they have never had the guts or democratic ethic to resolve.

PEOPLE who hold the opinion to ‘Remain’, because their access and ‘convenience’ of the single currency in the EU is important to them, forget the fact that the EU represents only one fourteenth of the population of the planet.

Champagne moment for us

MY hubby and I decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary with our usual dinner at the Crown in Huddersfield. For less than £12 the whole meal was splendid.

As we finished our drinks, the waitress appeared and asked if everything was okay. I said it was our anniversary and complimented them on the food and service. Within what seemed seconds as we prepared to leave, a bottle of bubbly appeared with two glasses and a photographer. How lovely of them!

In days where older people are sometimes treated shabbily, the staff at the Crown made the day for two oldies. Thank you!

Christian way is cheaper...

SO the latest craze or “self-
help technique” is now “Mindfulness” (The Yorkshire Post, May 24).

I recently attended a carers’ group meeting where a speaker came and spoke about this. Not impressed! Why are celebrities who on the surface appear to “have it all” are always searching for or pursuing “happiness”? If you want “peace of mind”, follow the teachings of Jesus -– and it won’t cost you a penny!

Two bobbies on the beat!

My wife and her friend visited Driffield town centre on Thursday – Market day. Last week she came home with a story I found hard to believe – that she had seen two police officers on foot patrol in the town. It is so long since we actually saw a patrolling PC that I can only think the new crime commissioner is having a good effect. If this is so, bravo and long may he reign.

Give cyclists enough room

RE recent correspondence on cyclists and motorists. In their haste, drivers do not give sufficient clearance to cyclists when overtaking. They forget that cyclists are exposed and can easily be affected by a gust of wind, for example.

I WATCHED the new edition of Top Gear. Likable as Chris Evans is, I would urge him not to give up the day job! Whatever Clarkson’s faults, his teamwork with May and Hammond was unbeatable but that was because they all knew their stuff!
