GP Taylor is right to highlight the dire state of rural public transport, but it isn’t only rural areas that suffer (The Yorkshire Post, August 15).

Here in Poppleton we have good daytime connections to central York but now just two buses in the evening.

Unfortunately the “north circular” No 20 bus providing our only direct link to major supermarkets in Acomb and Clifton Moor was axed some time ago. York City Council could not afford to support the western end of the route. It badly affected people who relied on the bus to go to work in Clifton Moor, a major employment area.

It was also interesting to see your report of Gordon Brown’s speech in Edinburgh (The Yorkshire Post, August 16). He funded counties to support rural bus services as well as extending the pensioner’s travel pass. Sadly the extra money was lost when the Conservative-led coalition came to power, so I am sorry to say that people in rural area who complain about worsening bus services have got the results of what they (or their neighbours) voted for.

Gordon Brown was never my favourite politician, but he did a lot to reduce child poverty and we can also thank him for keeping Britain out of the euro.
