YP Letters: Tories giving us sleepless nights over diesel vehicles

Should diesel vehicles be banned from the road?

I SINCERELY hope Theresa May has not put her chance of success on June 8 at risk by the poor announcement of plans to combat air quality and alleged pollution, as they had no substance worthy of the name. Owners of diesel cars and operators of diesel vans, HGVs, taxis and buses etc must wonder how much longer they will be able to afford to drive them, or if their business will survive.

Important issues like air quality or vehicle emissions rules are too important to leave to the whim of any local authority whose previous rationale has only ever been to seize any opportunity to raise revenues from motorists – e.g. via bus lane cameras in West Yorkshire.

Such measures are of national importance, and must be handled at Government level.

My wife and I are OAPs, age 74, and bought two new diesels in 2013 as replacements for 11-year-old ones. These have ultra-low CO2 emissions and are serviced every six months, even though covering just 4,000 miles each annually. We are now having sleepless nights wondering if we might soon be put off the road, as there is no way we could afford to replace these vehicles anytime soon. I don’t think we are alone in our fears, and wonder if this will put some off from voting Conservative.
