Pub review: The Winning Post, York

Bishy Road, as Bishopthorpe Road in York, is known is stacked with great cafés, bars, and shops and is arguably one of the best community-led areas in the city.

A little way up from town is a large, gusty pub that unfortunately from the outside looks a little down at heel and requires some negotiating through smokers to get inside.

Once there, the spirit of Bishy Road is ever present. Here is a pub with a big heart. There are posters offering music, comedy nights, and the spill over back room for diners also doubles up as an art gallery for local artists. Sadly there were no takers on my visit, but it was the promise of art and good beer which had taken me there in the first place, so hope it comes back.

The pub is tied but does its best. It boasts 32 different gins, 14 single malts, four cask ales, three premium lagers and some quality wines (the Marlborough Sauvignon was excellent).

Food also makes a great impact here with a menu of good, solid pub food without promising all things to everyone. The star was the pie, which, joy of joys, had a proper shortcrust pastry and a hearty meat filling.

Roll all of this together with a warm welcome from the landlord who was was willing to chat even though rushed shows excellent customer service. Just needs to get the doorstep smokers sorted and I for one would be back.
