Pupils issue car parking warning

PRIMARY school children in Barnsley are to go on patrol with the police to try and persuade parents not to park near to primary schools.

Children will join police and community support officers issuing warning cards to cars parked on zig zag lines in Vicarage Lane, Royston which leads to Royston St John Baptist CE Primary School and Royston Parkside Primary School.

Roy Miller, Barnsley Council’s cabinet spokesman on development, environment and culture, said: “This is just one of a number of initiatives that we hope will raise awareness about this issue.

“Like the notices say, parking on zig-zag lines is selfish and dangerous, can cause accidents and is inexcusable.

“I hope that anyone who receives one of these cards will stop and think about their actions.

“There are alternatives to parking outside the school gates on Vicarage Lane – parking is available on Church Street, which is within a few minutes’ walk of the schools.

“Anyone living within 10 minutes’ walk of the school will
probably find it easier and quicker to walk rather than take the
car.”
