‘Rambling Badgers’ can earn their stripes

After being trapped in an office all week, what could be better than going out into the magical Yorkshire Dales?

That is certainly the view of a group of friends who call themselves the “Rambling Badgers”. A gang of walking enthusiasts, they are now relishing the biggest challenge they have ever faced.

“You’re sitting behind a desk in a room with air conditioning, looking at a computer for five days a week,” said Roger Pugh, a freelance art worker known as “the flying stick”. “I feel like at the weekend I need to get out there and do something challenging.”

As challenges go, their latest venture is as tough as it gets.

Oxfam’s Trailtrekker is a 100km – 62-mile – charity trek through the Yorkshire Dales, taking up to 30 hours to complete.

“Walking through the night is something I haven’t done before,” Mr Pugh said.

For Graham Dobson, his work colleague and fellow Badger, walking is something that has grown on him over time.

“When I first did the Yorkshire Three Peaks I hated it!” he said. “But I gradually started to really enjoy walking. Getting to the end and feeling that sense of achievement is great.”

Around 300 teams take part each year to raise money for Oxfam. Places are still open for this year’s event on May 26-27.

Accountant Simon Breakwell, as “Beaky”, is well aware of how valuable teamwork will be.

“Having four of us there is of paramount importance really.,” he said. “It’s such a long way, and a long time to be awake – never mind to be walking.”

Team captain Dave Ingham admits the caper was his idea.“I just like challenges!” he quipped.
