THIS is the shocking picture of an adorable puppy who is lucky to be alive after being used as dog bait.

Hero, a five month-old French bulldog – pug cross, was found by a dog warden in Pearson Park in Hull, hobbling along and whining in pain.

He had deep lacerations and bite marks on his little legs which suggested he had been used by cruel thugs in the gruesome bloodsport.

Dog baiting is the monstrous “sport” of setting attack dogs against a chained or confined animal which is often smaller.

It is restrained so it can be savaged by the dogs, who bite and tear it often to death.

Vets found that Hero’s injuries were two to three days old, meaning he had been wandering around alone and in unbearable pain.

Infection had set in. He now has all four of his legs in bandages. Amy Bryan, from Hull Animal Welfare Trust, in Hull, who are taking care of the puppy, said: “Hero’s injuries are awful. He will have to undergo continual care.”

So far Hero has been scheduled for an operation at Kingston Vets in Hull, at the end of the week.
