Resort’s lift closed over safety fears

A CLIFF lift in a popular Yorkshire seaside resort has been temporarily closed amid safety concerns.

An inspection of the lift on Whitby’s West Cliff revealed corrosion on part of the shaft lining and Scarborough Borough Council officers are holding talks with technical experts. The council’s director of service delivery, Andy Skelton, admitted the temporary closure would create problems for the elderly and the disabled as the lift is regularly used by both visitors and residents.

He added: “With this in mind, we are currently investigating alternatives to assist people getting up and down the cliff and in the meantime we apologise for any inconvenience the temporary closure of the lift might cause. We hope to have the lift back in operation in time for the Spring Bank Holiday weekend and our engineers are working hard to try and achieve this.”
