Road closures signal ‘safer night out’

REVELLERS should be able to enjoy a safer night out when roads in Hull’s Old Town are closed to traffic this weekend.

Lowgate, between Alfred Gelder Street and Liberty Lane, and Princes Dock Street will shut from 9pm to 3am on Saturday and Sunday.

It follows successful trials last September and the award of a Purple Flag for the quality of its night-time entertainment.

Coun Martin Mancey said: “We pedestrianised the area over several weekends in September last year and the feedback was positive.

“Having a traffic-free environment promotes safety for diners and drinkers visiting the Old Town.

“Purple Flag assessors also highlighted the initiative as being a positive way to improve safety, as well as making the area more attractive for those enjoying the evening economy.”

Hull was the third to gain a Purple Flag in Yorkshire, joining Halifax and Sheffield.
