Rotherham United player arrested

Police in Staffordshire have arrested a Rotherham United footballer over allegations that he was involved in a nightclub brawl.

Tom Pope, 25, was arrested in Stafford in the early hours of Wednesday with two Port Vale players, including former Rotherham midfielder Gary Roberts.

Officers said the striker, who was signed to the club for a record fee in June 2009, had been released on police bail after being questioned on suspicion of assault alongside Roberts, 24, and a Port Vale defender Lee Collins, 22.

It is understood the three footballers had been at an event at a nightclub in the town called Go Wild, which was offering spirits and mixers for £1.50 or four bottles of alcohol for £5.

Port Vale chief executive Perry Deakin said: “These allegations will be fully investigated by the club and dealt with internally.”

Rotherham United, which recently welcomed Pope back after a three-month loan at Port Vale, declined to comment on the players’ arrests.
