Round with cricket star up for grabs at auction

HE has long been controversy’s favourite child, but people can get to know the real Kevin Pietersen - with a round of golf.

The round for two at the famous Wentworth club with the star, who has just brought out a much anticipated, hard-hitting autobiography, is the top lot at tomorrow’s Sailors’ Children’s Society’s annual sportsman’s lunch.

The charity has quickly sold out the event at the Mercure Grange Park Hotel, Willerby, and organisers hope the auction will put the icing on the cake.

All the money from ticket sales, auction and raffle go towards a winter clothing grant for 451 disadvantaged children supported by the charity.

Deanne Thomas, the society’s chief officer, said the golf day with Pietersen, donated by Henderson Insurance Brokers, was probably the best auction prize offered at the event so far.

She said: “We only learned about the prize a couple of weeks ago. All the recent coverage is sure to increase interest amongst bidders and we expect it to raise thousands rather than hundreds.

“Normally the entire auction raises between £5,000 to £8,000 so we certainly hope to reach the higher level with a top prize as popular as this.”

The main sponsors of the event - which raised a record £36,000 last October - are Williamsons Solicitors.
