Sausage firm gets Far East showcase

A Bradford-based sausage maker is capitalising on the Far East’s hunger for British meat by showcasing its wares in Hong Kong next week.

The British Premium Sausage Company was only set up three years ago but it already exports to 11 different countries as far and wide as Qatar, Jordan, Malta, Sweden and the Falkland Islands. The British Army is also a customer. The firm’s sausages are sent to Germany and Northern Ireland to feed Army personnel stationed there.

Company founders Ian Cundell and Andrew Dalton have already tasted some success in the Thailand and Hong Kong markets but they are keen to make even more of a clamour for British meat products which is emerging in growing markets on the other side of the world.

Mr Cundell said: “In the Chinese and Hong Kong markets... it’s the younger generation who have been to Europe and then gone back and have now got a taste for Western products.

“Where the UK market has been in tough times with the recession we have seen month on month growth. In a year, our sales are up 40 per cent.”

The food entrepreneurs are involved in a forthcoming Hong Kong trade show through EBLEX, the organisation for the English beef and sheep industry, and BPEX, representatives of pig levy payers in England. Both organisation are working in conjunction with UK Trade and Investment, which exists to help UK-based exporters succeed globally and assists overseas companies to bring investment to the UK.
