Sea-survivor search fails

A SECOND day of air and sea searches for five missing Russian sailors was unsuccessful, officials said.

MV Swanland, a cargo vessel managed by Grimsby-based Torbulk Ltd, sank in the Irish Sea on Sunday after being hit by an “enormous wave”. Two men were airlifted to safety by an RAF helicopter co-piloted by the Duke of Cambridge. Chief Officer Leonid Safonov, 50, was pronounced dead after his body was recovered from the sea. All eight crew were Russian citizens. Russia’s ambassador to the UK, Alexander Yakovenko, sent a letter to Prince William thanking the search and rescue teams for their efforts.
