Sexual consent lessons failing

THREE out of 10 youngsters claim they are not taught about consent during sex education classes, a new poll suggests.

School children should be taught about consent in sex and relationships education yet 30 per cent say they have not been taught about the issue, the Sex Education Forum have claimed.

Formal teaching about sexual consent is “woefully lacking”, said the forum, which represents a group of organisations working to improve children’s knowledge of sex and relationship issues.

The organisation, which is based at the children’s charity the National Children’s Bureau, said that learning about consent is “integral” to good sex education.

Its poll of almost 900 children and young people found that 43% said they had not been taught what constitutes a “good or bad” relationship.
