Sheriff seeks out county's heroes

Anthony Cooper, who holds the ceremonial office for one year, is looking to mark his 12 months in the role by recognising individuals who have shown "exemplary commitment to their community".

The award, which is in its 18th year, has two areas of recognition, one for adults and one for under- 18s who have shown commitment to a project or youth community scheme.

Finalists will be honoured at ceremony with the outstanding finalist receiving the High Sheriff's award along with a cheque for 500 to be donated to their chosen project, community group or charity.

The winner of the separate youth award will receive a cheque for 250.

Mr Cooper said: "There are people throughout the length and breadth of the county who are helping their communities in so many ways and their commitment often passes completely unrecognised, despite having given endless hours of their time.

"Many have given years of service to their communities without asking for or expecting thanks, simply being keen just to make a difference.

"There are many who deserve recognition and this award looks for one who stands out for special attention."

Nominations for the award can come from individuals or community organisations.

Applications will be assessed by an independent panel.

The awards ceremony will take place at Rotherham Town Hall on March 9 and the closing date for entries is February 11.
