Shopkeeper fined over fire safety
Nabil Tariq, owner of Crest supermarket in Doncaster Road, Goldthorpe, was found guilty at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court for failing to comply with an enforcement notice and also failing to have a “suitable and sufficient” risk assessment.
Tariq was fined £1,300 by magistrates, and ordered to pay costs of £1,800.

Hide AdHe was found to have damaged fire escape doors, to have failed to properly maintain fire alarms and extinguishers and to have failed to provide his staff with fire safety training.
Technical fire safety support manager Terry Guthrie said: “We’re pleased with this verdict, as it shows business owners that fire safety legislation isn’t something they can simply ignore.
“The message this verdict sends to the businesses community it a clear one – if you don’t comply, you risk prosecution.
“But prosecution is a last resort. The majority of businesses we visit are conscientious.”
