Shoppers' mobility scheme launched

DISABLED shoppers are to benefit from a scheme officially launched this week to boost the mobility of people visiting Northallerton.

Sally Anderson, mayor of Northallerton and chair of the Northallerton and Villages Community Forum, cut the ribbon on the "shopmobility" project.

The not-for profit initiative provides a fleet of scooters and wheelchairs available for hire from a town centre shop.

She said: "This project is an excellent example of how the private, public and voluntary sectors can work together to develop a scheme of huge benefit to the local community."

The project has been developed by the Northallerton and Villages Community Forum in partnership with Abbey Health, Age Concern and the Northallerton and District Voluntary Services Association.

Funding for the fleet of scooters was secured from Hambleton District Council's Community Grant scheme. It was also supported by a grant from the umbrella organisation Hambleton Strategic Partnership.

Scooters are available to hire Monday-Saturday from 9am until 4.30pm. Powered scooters are available for 5 per day and manual wheelchairs for 3 per day. For further details contact Abbey Health on 01609 781333.
