Sick mother halts £147,000 trial

The trial of car salesman Richard Esprit, accused of stealing more than £147,000 from Premier League soccer star John Carew, the Aston Villa striker, was adjourned at Birmingham Crown Court because Esprit's mother was seriously ill.

Esprit, of Wraysbury, near Staines, Middlesex, has pleaded not guilty to three counts of fraud involving two Porsche cars and two of theft.
