“She is currently in intensive care undergoing tests and is awake and in good spirits. More updates to come as we hear them. Light a candle and sing a song, let’s all send good wishes her way.”

In December of last year she revealed to Billboard magazine that she was suffering from Morgellons disease, a rare skin condition which she claimed is preventing her from performing.

“I can’t sing any more - don’t miss it. I can’t play any more - don’t miss it. I’ve got all these instruments laying around and hopefully one day I’ll pick them up,” she was quoted as saying.

The first update on the 71-year-old singer’s Twitter account read: “Joni has been hospitalised. We are awaiting official word on her condition and will post it here as soon as we know.”

The Canadian-born singer is famous for hits such as Big Yellow Taxi, and has won eight Grammys in her career. Her landmark release Blue is considered one of the best records of all time.
