Star parrot who really isn’t dead – just resting

It could so easily have been influenced by the plot of a Monty Python sketch.

However, the ability of a Yorkshire parrot to roll over and play dead has seen it selected
for a top job at one of the country’s major tourist attractions.

Charlie, a 32-year-old blue
and gold macaw – as opposed
to the much-lampooned Norwegian Blue – saw off competition from three other birds to land the role at
Legoland in Windsor where he will play a starring role in the Castaway Camp, which is part of a new pirate adventure play area opening soon.

Charlie’s owner Peter Bloom, 55, from Pickering in North Yorkshire, has had the bird for 30 years since he bought her in Scotland where she was first hatched.

Mr Bloom said he believed the macaw was chosen for the role as she can roll over and act is if she is an ex-parrot.

Legoland spokeswoman Lauren Moss said: “We were very impressed by all our candidates.

“In fact, they were all so gifted, picking the perfect parrot for the post was incredibly tough.

“The resort and this hotel is all about colour, fun, surprises and, of course, making children smile, which any one of these birds could do. But Charlie just had that extra touch of piratey mischief and we think she will fit right in when she takes up her special Lego parrot perch next month.”
