Steam magic as Mallard brought home

THE world-famous locomotive, Mallard, returned to York yesterday after being hauled by another rail celebrity – the steam star of the Harry Potter films, Olton Hall.

No. 4468 Mallard was brought back to the National Railway Museum in York after it had been taken up to the NRM’s sister attraction, Locomotion in Shildon, County Durham, last summer.

A spokeswoman for the NRM confirmed that Mallard, which holds the world speed record for a steam locomotive at 126 miles per hour, will be travelling to Germany in the late autumn to go on display at the DB Museum in Nuremberg. It will be the star attraction in an exhibition to mark the 75th anniversary of Germany’s short ownership of the world-speed crown. Mallard will then return to England in the New Year.
