Students shine a light on new solutions to real world issues

Around 30 students have contributed to an exhibition showcasing their work.

One of the arrangements featured comprises LED-illuminated silicone raindrops, aimed at encouraging people to consider the chemical composition of water.

It was designed in collaboration with The Long Well Walk, a social enterprise project which is planning a 10,000-mile-plus hike between Sheffield and Cape Town to fund clean water projects in the developing world.

Among the other 15 three-dimensional installations are herbs cultivated in vodka bottles to inspire students to use their initiative to grow their own food.

All the creations are the culmination of students spending three months working with professionals from healthcare, digital media and new technology and sustainable enterprise.

Senior lecturer Sally Billau said: “Working alongside industry professionals like this, we’ve challenged our students to apply their design knowledge in a creative yet practical way, and using a range of design and fabrication techniques.”

The free ‘Exposed’ exhibition is open to the public and runs at Bank Street Arts until Saturday at 5pm.
