Toads cash funds more art projects

THE legacy of an award-winning public arts project is continuing with the launch of a fresh wave of funding for arts projects in East Yorkshire.

The Larkin25 arts awards are funded by proceeds from the charitable auction of 40 fibreglass toads that were sold following their appearance in Hull in summer 2010 as part of a series of events to mark the 25th anniversary of the death of poet Philip Larkin.

Two awards totalling £5,000 a year are available up to 2014, with a maximum single award of £3,000.

Elaine Burke, chair of the Larkin25 Awards committee, said: “We are excited to build on the massive success and legacy of Larkin25. It is vital to support our region’s artists and we are proud to encourage exceptional local arts initiatives that contribute to the vibrant cultural life of this area.”

Last year’s grants funded a book of poems, prose, photographs and paintings, and a theatre project being staged in September.

Larkin With Toads won Silver in the Best Tourism Event of the Year category at the Visit England Awards for Excellence 2012.
