Town’s 1,000 extra homes under fire

A CAMPAIGN has been launched against proposed housing developments on green spaces around an East Riding town.

East Riding Council is consulting on its Local Development Plan, which includes proposals to allow about 1,000 new homes to be built on the edge of Hessle, near Hull, over the next 17 years. The main concentration of building would be on fields off Jenny Brough Lane.

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary spokeswoman for Hessle, Claire Thomas, said: “These proposals are just not thought through. There are no provisions in the plans to increase local services such as schools and health care, and there are real concerns for increased traffic and the potential for increased flooding risk.”

The council’s Lib Dem group leader and Hessle councillor, Brian Jefferies, said: “These proposed developments are just not sustainable. They will be accessed via a small country lane and involve the loss of well-used green spaces.”

Phil Davison, a Lib Dem councillor for Hessle, added: “Not only do these plans mean houses will be built on valuable green spaces, but there is no provision for affordable housing. I hope people in Hessle will respond to the consultation and make their views known.”

People have until April 5 to respond. Beverley has the highest house building target, of up to 3,400 in the next 15 years, with Bridlington just behind at 3,300. Driffield could get up to 2,300 new homes and Goole 1,900. Elloughton-cum-Brough could get 1,000 extra homes and Withernsea 550.
