All trains from, to or through Huddersfield Railway Station cancelled this weekend due to Transpennine Route Upgrade

Disruption is on the way for those hoping to travel to Huddersfield via train this weekend as the railway station’s major upgrade continues.

According to the Transpennine Route Upgrade’s (TRU) website, no trains will be running to, from, or through Huddersfield Railway Station on both Saturday, August 17 and Sunday, August 18.

Instead, services between Manchester and Leeds will be diverted via the Calder Valley route and replacement buses will be used for services to and from local stations.

Cancellations have taken place every weekend in August so far, as work is ongoing on the multi-billion-pound TRU project. The massive scheme wants to better connect Northern destinations, putting faster and more frequent routes in place, along with cleaner, greener trains.

Plans for Huddersfield Railway Station will see two new platforms added, existing platforms extended, improved accessibility with a new footbridge and lifts, the roof restored, and new toilet facilities.

On top of this, there will be track upgrades to support more trains and the historic Grade II listed tearooms will be repaired, repainted and relocated on its current platform.

Paul Sumner, senior sponsor on the TRU said previously: “Huddersfield Station is an iconic building and an intrinsic part of West Yorkshire heritage, so while this series of improvements are necessary, the restoration and retention of its historic features is of paramount importance.

“That’s why – after an extensive in-depth planning process – the TRU will bring the station up to modern standards in terms of functionality, without harming its cultural and traditional significance.”
