'Hazardous' speed bumps in Yorkshire village won't be replaced despite petition

A Yorkshire village’s ‘hazardous’ speed bumps are set to remain despite a petition being put together by residents.

Barnsley Council will not replace ‘hazardous’ speed humps through Great Houghton after a petition calling for them to be removed or modified gained 220 signatures.

Councillor James Higginbottom, the council’s cabinet member for transport, told cabinet it has been an ‘ongoing issue’ – but ‘no other action’ will be taken.

“The traffic team has undertaken an assessment of road safety on the High Street to Great Houghton….the evidence demonstrates that there are no collision clusters close to the site and no speeding issues that have been identified,” he told a cabinet meeting on Wednesday (Jul 24).

“The existing speed cushions are found to be an effective form of traffic calming.”

In response to concerns about the maintenance of the ‘speed cushions’, Coun Higginbotton added the point ‘has been taken away by the traffic team’, and the southbound approach to the village would be added to the mobile speed camera rota.
