Tributes to schoolgirl, 15, in hanging tragedy

THE headteacher of a Yorkshire secondary school has paid tribute to a popular pupil who died in hospital after being found hanged.

Olivia Glennie, 15, from Newsome in Huddersfield, died in Leeds General Infirmary on Monday morning.

She was treated in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit following the incident on Tuesday evening last week in Armitage Bridge, Huddersfield.

Olivia was found by a man walking his dog in a wooded area near to Armitage Bridge Cricket Club.

Paramedics were called to the scene and transferred the her to hospital.

Her death has shocked staff and students at Newsome High School where she was a pupil in Year 11.

Headteacher Paul Gittins described Olivia as a ‘popular and outgoing girl’.

In a statement, he said: “The whole school community is deeply saddened by these tragic events.

“Olivia was a popular and outgoing girl with a close circle of friends and popular with staff.

“We are doing everything we can to provide support to all those who need it.

“The school is being fully supported by the local authority.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Olivia, her family and her many friends at this distressing time.”

West Yorkshire Police said Olivia’s death was not being treated as suspicious.

Details of funeral arrangements have not been released.
