Woodhead Pass: Car fire which spread to Moorlands causes traffic chaos with road closed both ways

The A628 Woodhead Pass is closed in both directions between the A57 (Hollingworth) and the A616 (Flouch) due to a moorland fire.

The Woodhead Pass was closed in both directions at around 2.30pm on Thursday July 16, following a car fire which spread to adjacent Moorlands.

A multi-agency response involving units from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, National Highways and South Yorkshire Police worked throughout the day to contain the fire.

At around 11pm on Thursday evening South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that due to fading light work at the scene had stopped, with crews having left the area.

Plans are in place to return on Friday to assess the current situation and begin work again.

With fire crews having left a discussion was held between National Highways and South Yorkshire Police, the outcome of this was that the A628 will remain closed in both directions throughout for safety reasons due to this fire and another unrelated fire at Tintwistle.

Traffic at the scene is being diverted via local routes.

Traffic travelling from further afield may wish to use alternative trans-pennine routes such as the M1, M62 and M60.
