Travelling thugs warned over justice crackdown

Troublemakers heading to South Africa for the World Cup were warned yesterday that they will face the "full force" of the local police.

The police chief in charge of combating English football violence during the tournament said a fast-track courts system was in place.

And he said anyone who takes part in football-related violence in South Africa will face a banning order when they return home.

Andy Holt, the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) lead on the policing of football, will head a team of 12 uniformed British officers in South Africa.

The officers are from the South Yorkshire, Metropolitan Police, Merseyside, Staffordshire, West Mercia, Greater Manchester, Northumbria and Thames Valley forces and the UK Football Policing Unit.

In November last year 3,180 football banning orders were in place. Leeds United supporters had the most bans –162.
