The 28-year-old roads policing officer died in hospital after being involved in a collision with a Mitsubishi 4x4 while on patrol near Burstwick, in Holderness.

His family are backing a fundraising appeal by Humberside Police Federation for Yorkshire Air Ambulance, which airlifted the “considerate and caring” officer to hospital.

Parents John and Sue and fiancée Roxanne said they had been moved and comforted by the many condolences they had received for Pc Wylie, who worked mainly on the south bank covering northern Lincolnshire.

In a statement they said: “The sudden and tragic death of Russ has left us devastated and bereft.

“The loss we feel for this warm and caring man is immeasurable.

“He was full of so many hopes and dreams for the future that the thought of life without him is unbearable.

“Since Russ died we have found out so much more about him; how respected he was by many and how much people thought of him. From the best wishes passed on by his friends and colleagues to the comments made by members of the public who Russ helped in the everyday course of his work, we have been surprised by the general outpouring of grief and we are extremely proud of him and his achievements.

“He looked after everyone and couldn’t do enough for others, taking time out to help friends and neighbours alike. He made you feel safe and secure and he was considerate, caring and patient. We always knew he was a good person, but had never imagined how he impacted on others.”

Pc Wylie’s funeral will be held tomorrow. The cortege will leave from Tetney, near Grimsby, and will pass Grimsby Police Station around 2.45pm where it will pause to allow officers and staff to pay their respects, before continuing on to Haltemprice Crematorium.
