Trueman statue unveiled

CRICKET legend "Fiery" Fred Trueman's legendary bowling action has been immortalised in bronze in the Yorkshire town he called home for many years.

The 7ft statue, showing Trueman in full fast-bowling flow, was unveiled next to the canal in Skipton by his widow Veronica after a three-year fund-raising campaign.

Mrs Trueman, who was married to the Yorkshire and England bowler for 36 years until his death in 2006, was joined for the ceremony by cricket luminaries, including umpire Dickie Bird, as well as the Yorkshire sculptor Graham Ibbeson.

Mr Ibbeson is internationally known for his figures, including statues of comedians Eric Morecambe and Les Dawson, as well as Dickie Bird himself, which is in Barnsley.
