Maldives protests amid coup claims

Supporters of the former president of the Maldives rioted yesterday demanding his reinstatement as new leader Mohammed Waheed Hassan appealed for unity.

Mohamed Nasheed, the nation’s first democratically-elected president, now says he was forced to resign at gunpoint on Tuesday.

Nasheed left office after police joined street protests because he sacked a judge who freed a government critic. The Government has denied claims there was a coup
