Alagiah has
bowel cancer

NEWSREADER GEORGE Alagiah has been diagnosed with bowel cancer and is to be off air for the near future while he receives treatment, the BBC has confirmed.

The presenter, 58, who has become a familiar figure on bulletins since he joined the BBC 25 years ago, is said to be “optimistic” about a positive outcome after the corporation confirmed the illness yesterday.

The Sri Lanka-born journalist first began hosting BBC1’s News At Six in early 2003, and stepped up to front it solo four years later.
