Pope honours peace champion

The Pope has knighted Northern Ireland peace process founder John Hume.

The Nobel Laureate and former SDLP leader, 75, whose dialogue with Sinn Fein paved the way for the end of violence and the signing of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, was made a Knight of St Gregory for his peace work. Mr Hume, from Londonderry, founded the SDLP, which represented the majority of nationalists in Northern Ireland for many years until it was overtaken in the polls by Sinn Fein relatively recently.
