Royal sketches mark anniversary

SKETCHES by British couturier Norman Hartnell, who was the principal designer of the outfits worn at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, are to go on show this summer.

They will form part of an exhibition at Buckingham Palace to mark the 60th anniversary of the event.

The exhibition runs from July 27 until September 29 and will feature what is described as an unprecedented array of the dress, uniform and robes worn by those who took part in the historic event on June 2, 1953.

Hartnell went on to design the wedding dress worn by Princess Margaret at her marriage in 1960, and continued to design for the Queen and other Royals into the 1970s.

He become known as the First Knight of Fashion in the press, before his death in 1979.
