Video: Two new Yorkshire bishops take their bow

History was made during the service as the area of Huddersfield was given its first ever bishop with The Revd Dr Jonathan Gibbs, who was Rector of Heswall in the Diocese of Chester for seventeen years.

Huddersfield is a new bishopric covering the local authority areas of Calderdale and Kirklees and is one of the five ‘episcopal areas’ of the new Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales created last Easter.

Revd Dr Gibbs, the new Bishop of Huddersfield, said, “I am delighted to be coming to Yorkshire and to be joining the new Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales at this exciting time.”

During the service the two candidates were presented to the Archbishop of York. the Most Revd Dr John Sentamu. and made their oaths of obedience.

The Revd Dr Toby Howarth was presented by the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of Leeds, Rt Revd Nick Baines, and Revd Dr Jonathan Gibbs, was presented by the Bishop of Chester, Rt. Revd Dr Peter Forster, and the Bishop of Leeds.

Both the new bishops will also be officially welcomed at services in their new Episcopal Areas next month.
