Uninsured Bradford driver says he killed young mum

The fatal collision, which claimed the life of pedestrian Zakhra Bi, 34, prompted a road safety campaign involving pupils from St Matthew’s Church of England Primary School and a near 1000-name petition was later handed to Bradford Council.

Campaigners called for speed cameras and other traffic calming measures to be installed on Mayo Avenue, which has a 30mph limit but links onto the M606.

Yesterday the prosecution formally accepted a guilty plea from Zahir Iqbal to a charge of causing Mrs Bi’s death by careless driving.

Iqbal, 31, of Sherwell Rise, Allerton, Bradford, has also admitted causing the death while driving whilst uninsured.

Mrs Bi, of White’s View. Girlington, suffered fatal head injuries when she was struck by a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution near to Morrisons supermarket on March 29.

She died at the scene.

At the time of the accident Mrs Bi’s youngest child was just one.

Judge John Potter adjourned Iqbal’s sentence hearing until April 11, but he warned the defendant that he faced a prison term for the offences.

Iqbal was granted bail until the next hearing and the judge imposed an interim driving ban.

In April 2010 St Matthew’s pupil Israr Saad, seven, was knocked down and killed on the same pedestrian crossing.

Sajjad Khan was later jailed for nine months after he admitted causing the boy’s death by careless driving. Khan was also banned from driving for three years.

In October last year the headteacher at St Matthew’s, Bob Curran, said the school was very concerned about the speeds that some drivers reached on Mayo Avenue and Rooley Lane.

More than 450 pupils attend St Matthew’s and many of them have to cross Mayo Avenue twice a day.
