University engineers topping ritual

A CEREMONY has been held to mark the “topping out” of a new £21m building for Sheffield University.

The university’s engineering graduate school, which is being built at the corner of Newcastle Street and Broad Lane in the city, officially reached its highest point earlier this week.

The university says the seven-storey building is scheduled for completion by the end of the year – and will provide facilities for the faculty of engineering as part of an £154m investment in engineering over 10 years.

Once complete, the school will house two lecture theatres as well as several teaching and study spaces.

Sheffield University’s head of engineering, Professor Mike Hounslow, yesterday said: “As we celebrate the news that the University of Sheffield has now overtaken the University of Cambridge in terms of the research funding we attract, the engineering graduate school is a vital element in our determination to create an engineering estate which reflects the quality and expertise of the work we do.

“Sheffield has an excellent and growing reputation for its engineering excellence and by 2020 we expect an additional 1600 engineering students and around 400 extra staff to support that growth.

“It is essential that we can deliver the right amount and quality of teaching and learning space to accommodate them.”
