The site has remained empty since it was devastated by the original fire in 2012, but has been the target of repeated arson attacks since, as well as being blighted by fly tipping and vandalism.

Sheffielders took to social media to poke fun at the latest inferno to hit the site.

Russell Clarke posted on Twitter: “Sheffield Ski Village. Why are you always on fire?! All the time I’ve known you, you’ve been on fire. Are you made of twigs and petrol?!”

On Reddit a whole thread was dedicated to banter about the blaze.

ChickenLabs wrote: “Just like the Springfield Tyre Fire, the Flaming Ski Village is now a Sheffield tourist attraction.”

Another Reddit user wrote: “Nothing is certain but death, taxes, and the Sheffield Ski Village being on fire.

“I’m at a stage where I’m wondering how they manage to burn something that is already ash.”

Last-starfighter posted: “How is there anything left to ignite? Are the arsonists now shipping in timber and other flammables just to keep up the tradition?”

The ski village was the largest artificial ski resort in Europe during its heyday, featuring a shop, bar, restaurant and range of slopes.

In May the abandoned ski village became a viral video hit when two skiers and a snowboarder took to the deserted slopes in an urban exploration film by Salt Street Productions.
