THE THUNDER of horses disturbed the tranquil idyll of Chatsworth estate as its annual country fair got underway.

The medieval jousting display from the Knights of Arkley stole the show with a display of medieval jousting at the launch of the three-day event.

Meanwhile, a modern knight in shining armour presided over the excitement in the grounds of Derbyshire’s grand stately home.

Olympic Gold Medalist Sir Matthew Pinsent CBE got stuck into his role as the fair’s president.

The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire added the royal seal of approval to yesterday’s fair, which attracted thousands of visitors.

This year’s event boasts the “biggest and best foodie offering yet”, and celebrity chef Tom Kerridge’s cooking demonstrations added a touch of stardust to proceedings.

Saturday will see the pearl of the Peak District play host to a special Battle of Britain memorial display.

Spitfire and Hurricane fighter planes are set to take to the skies and engage in a thrilling flypast to mark the 75th anniversary of World War Two.
