Video: Thousands support our #YellowYorkshire fundraiser

The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Wear it Yellow Day fundraiser saw over 50 businesses, schools and community groups in Yorkshire pledge to spend a day embracing the Tour de France’s famous Maillot Jaune yellow jersey in aid of the lifesaving charity.

Around 500 pupils at Dewsbury’s Thornhill Community Academy, star of BAFTA-winning TV show Educating Yorkshire, took part as the region geared up for Saturday’s Grand Depart by combining to raise a four-figure sum that continues to grow.

Tour-tinged celebrations of the world’s greatest cycle race even went global, with Hewlett Construction turning both its Leeds head office and its office in Muscat, Oman, yellow for the day.

Thornhill was visited by YAA aircraft, as staff and pupils also enjoyed a static bike challenge and yellow canteen food in the name of the charity.

Wearing a yellow tie, Thornhill headteacher Jonny Mitchell told the YEP: “There are so many positive things going on in Yorkshire, and it’s important we celebrate.

“Wear it Yellow Day was ideal, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance is a cause that touches a lot of people’s hearts.”

YAA fundraising teams are touring the county to visit organisations taking part in Wear it Yellow Day, which saw every individual getting involved donating £1 each to the charity.

The fundraising day was the product of our long-running #yellowyorkshire campaign to give the county a yellow hue ahead of Le Tour.

A whole host of yellow and cycling-related fundraisers came from the event, with Leeds Bradford Airport hosting a colourful 3km ‘Tour de Runway’ cycle race, Bluefin Harrogate hosting a bake-off and Bruntcliffe School in Morley setting up a fundraising counter.

Elsewhere Primley Park Dentistry, in Alwoodley, donated £5 to YAA for every customer who turned up wearing yellow, PwC in Leeds backed the event and staff at JLL Leeds donned the colour yellow and raised over £1,000 on the day.

Nicola Furbisher, managing editor of the YEP, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the support for Wear it Yellow Day – it just goes to show how passionate and excited the country is to host the Grand Depart.

“All the money raised will support the YAA’s lifesaving work, so every penny counts. We’re all looking forward to a landmark weekend in Yorkshire.”
