Warning over bathtime drownings

PARENTS are being warned not to leave babies and toddlers unattended in the bath following a number of deaths and “near miss” incidents in Bradford in recent years.

The warning has come from Anita Parkin, director of public health for Bradford Council, who said there had been several deaths in the city related to babies being left alone – and potentially more “near misses”.

Parents are being warned that bath seats and rings should not be considered safety devices.

The message is being spread by health workers and children’s services staff.

Studies of bath drownings indicate that there is often a history of leaving the baby in the bath unsupervised or in the care of another child.

Ms Parkin said: “Drowning incidents often occur silently and within a short time, in as little as two centimetres of water.

“They can occur in less time than it takes to answer the telephone or fetch a towel.

“We’re working with health workers and children’s services staff to make sure parents and carers are clear of the risks in order to prevent future accidents.”
