Lorry thieves cause Leeds rush-hour traffic chaos

Motorists faced severe delays this afternoon after thieves crashed a stolen wagon close to a motorway junction in Leeds before running off.

The truck, loaded with rubble, was stolen from a premises on Jack Lane at about 2pm on Wednesday.

Minutes later the thieves crashed it on nearby Dewsbury Road, close to the junction with the M621, leaving it overturned, with debris littering the road.

They jumped out of the vehicle and ran off before police closed the road, causing major queues and hold-ups for public transport.

The A653 Dewsbury Road was closed with queueing traffic northbound between the Parkfield Street junction and the Jack Lane junction. Congestion stretched back to junction 4 on the M621.
