Sheffield: M1 closed after lorry hits pedestrian

THE M1 was closed in South Yorkshire this afternoon after a pedestrian was hit by a lorry on the carriageway.

The incident happened just before noon at junction 34 near Meadowhall, after a morning of snowfall.

The motorway was closed northbound between junction 34 and 35 at Thorpe Hesley, and is expected to remain so for most of the afternoon. The southbound carriageway was also closed for a time but reopened at 1pm.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said a man had been taken to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

Northbound traffic is being routed around the junction and back on again, Long tailbacks are reported.
