Whitby Goth Weekend attracts big crowds

The annual music event kicked off with various bands headlining the Pavilion on Friday night.

Sunday saw an annual football match at The Turnbull Ground between the goths and locals.

Among the other attrractions on offer were the Bizarre Bazaar - an alternative market featuring more than 100 stalls selling a whole range of items for almost every aspect of the goth and alternative scene - and club nights.

Whitby Goth Weekend was founded in 1994 by Jo Hampshire of Top Mum Promotions and has grown to become one of the world’s leading Goth events.

It grew to be so popular that since 1997 it has been held twice a year, in April and October.

Whitby Goth Weekend is designed to be a ‘celebration of the non-conformity, diversity and freedom of expression the scene embodies’.

The goth subculture began in England during the early 1980s in the gothic rock scene and it has associated tastes in music, aesthetics, and fashion.

The next event takes place from November 4-6.
