Winter gallery: Snow covers North Yorkshire and more showers forecast

Up to 10cm (3.9in) of snow is predicted in some places, mostly across eastern areas of Britain.

The Met Office reports today will be another cold day across Yorkshire with sunny spells, wintry showers and a chilly northwesterly wind. The showers are likely to die out inland during the afternoon with the conditions becoming mainly sunny across most parts.

Winds will decrease later in the day but it will still be cool with maximum temperatures of 6°C.

Tonight, the cloud is expected to melt away, leaving some long clear spells and becoming frosty in many areas with icy patches on untreated surfaces. Wind speeds will ease but the mercury will plummet, to as low as -3°C.

It is expected to be a cold and frosty start to tomorrow, albeit sunny, before cloudy skies develop later in the day, accompanied by a freshening breeze.

Western areas of Yorkshire will be hit by rain towards midnight with snow, mainly over the Pennines. Tomorrow’s maximum temperature is forecast to be 6°C.

More snow, and rain, is expected for much of Wednesday.

The chilly weather brought the UK’s coldest temperature in four years yesterday - on Valentine’s Day - as snow and icy weather swept large parts of the country.

Severe weather warnings were in place for northern England and Scotland, where the mercury dropped as low as minus 14.1°C in Braemar, Aberdeenshire.

It was the UK’s lowest temperature since 2012, when minus 15.6°C was recorded in Holbeach, Lincolnshire, the Met Office said.
